UNT Policy 15.016 (Unmanned Aircraft System Operations) governs all UAS activity at the University of North Texas and may be reviewed HERE.
All UAS operations on UNT property, whether indoors or outdoors, require prior written authorization from Risk Management Services (RMS).
Approval of this request authorizes access to UNT property only and does not constitute FAA authorization or validation of pilot qualifications, equipment, or airspace compliance.
In the event of any inconsistency, UNT Policy 15.016 governs.
Authorization Requirements
- Unauthorized UAS operations on UNT property are prohibited.
- Approved operations must comply with UNT Policy 15.016 and all applicable federal, state, and local laws.
- Indoor UAS operations remain subject to UNT authorization even when FAA airspace authorization is not required.
UAS Operating Requirements
Approved operations are subject to the following conditions:
- Flights must remain within the approved flight plan and designated boundaries.
- UAS must not be flown over people.
- A visual observer (spotter), separate from the pilot, is required for all operations.
- The UAS must remain within the Pilot in Command’s visual line of sight at all times.
- The Pilot in Command is responsible for determining whether FAA airspace authorization is required and for obtaining such authorization prior to flight.
- Operators must maintain safe control of the aircraft and take corrective action if the aircraft deviates from the intended path.
A copy of the approved UNT UAS Use Permit must be available at the flight location and presented upon request to UNT Police, Risk Management Services, or other authorized officials.
Pilots are responsible for determining applicable airspace requirements. FAA-recognized B4UFLY partners may be used as informational tools to check airspace status, and FAA-approved UAS Service Supplier applications may be used to obtain LAANC authorizations where required.
Use of FAA tools does not replace required FAA authorizations or UNT approval.
